Every day they don’t take action is another day that our community is at risk of dying in detention. The Biden Administration must live up to their commitment of advancing the rights of LGBTQ+ people worldwide.
The campaign is currently supported by a broad coalition of grassroots, national immigrant rights, and LGBTQ+ organizations. Together, we’re uplifting the voices of transgender people who have experienced mental and physical abuse by ICE and, despite all the inflicted trauma, are still thriving, resisting and fighting for a more just future for themselves and their transgender community.
“No one should be locked up there. Especially trans people because we are humiliated, mistreated and psychologically harmed. I lived all that in my own flesh and it is not fair.”
“This is the time to raise our voices and demand the closure of all detention centers, and to stop the mistreatment and abuse that we experience when we are locked up.”
“I know what it feels like to have your dreams pinned down. I am hopeful that all the work we do one day will lead to all detention centers being closed.”
“The same mockery, trampling and abuse that damages our self-esteem on the streets happens in detention centers. At least on the streets I have the freedom to turn away.”
“While in custody, I was constantly discriminated against and mistreated by ICE officers. They yelled at us and, when we got sick, we were not allowed to see a doctor.”
“Officers don’t treat transgender people living with HIV AIDS well. We experience rampant discrimination and are not given our medication.”
